Steven Pesantez might not be a hero for everyone, but for this one random pigeon, he’s the greatest hero.
A few days ago, Pesantez and his friend Mariel Anne Mitkowski were standing at the terminal for the Staten Island Ferry in New York. Suddenly, they noticed something unusual.
“We saw the bird hanging out on the water fountain,” Pesantez told The Dodo. “He was hanging out there for a while.”
Other passersby were quite unconcerned about the whole scene, but Pesantez began to suspect that the pigeon was trying to communicate something. Judging by how he was standing on the water tap, he figured that the pigeon was desperately asking for water. So, while Mitknowski filmed, Pesantez decided to lend the hand a hand to the thirsty bird.
“He had his head in there, drinking the water. He was absolutely enjoying it,” Pesantez recalled.
Quite frankly, the chance encounter will not be made into a grand movie anytime soon. However, it’s still quite touching. If only for a moment, humans and pigeon-kind spoke in a heartfelt unspoken way.
“It was very zen. I picked up what the bird was putting down,” Pesantez said. “It was cool to see an animal that needed help and to be able to help him. I felt so one with nature, in the ferry terminal.”
There’s no saying if such an occurrence will ever happen again- but Pesantez will not stay put if it does:
“Going forward, if I ever see a pigeon on that water fountain again, you better believe he’s getting some water, too.”
