Gumby was a rebel that refused to be contained. Because he is a hound, he had a tendency to roam about. But this pooch is giving Houdini a run for his money—he has become so good at escaping! Gumby was only a few years old when he was found wandering the streets of South Carolina. He was taken in by the Charleston Animal Society.

He was healthy, good-looking and got along well with everyone. The staff at the shelter knew he would get adopted very quickly, and he was. They just didn’t know how long he would remain with his adoptive family. His first adoption lasted only three days. His second adoption lasted a little long—six days.

Gumby spent the next couple of years being adopted and returned back to the shelter. The shelter dropped him off at his adoptive parents eight times, and was picked up off of the street three times.

While his adoptive parents wanted him back, they didn’t know just what to do with his frequent escapes. Then one of the staff members at the shelter realized what he kept coming back for.

“He knows he has work to do,” Behavior Team Leader Donya Satriale said.

They realized that Gumby had a special gift. He had the ability to calm down and comfort dogs at the shelter who were feeling restless or anxious.

So instead of finding him a new home, they decided to put him to work at the shelter. He helps with behavioral demonstrations and also helps new dogs adjust. He has become a sort of “Ambassa-Dog”.

The Charleston Animal Society is a no-kill shelter, which is great for Gumby. He might have been in danger if it wasn’t.

Gumby also works a second job at the Charleston Animal Society. He helps to heal sick kittens with eye infections by donating his blood.

“Gumby gives back! Remember Gumby the white hound who returned to the shelter 11 times and now is our playgroup King?” the Charleston Animal Society wrote on their Facebook page. “Well, he is now a blood donor for kittens with eye infections! We draw his blood every two weeks extract the white blood cells from his blood and administer to the kittens’ eyes! (Healing eye drops) The serum from his blood has healing properties! Opie will heal faster.”
