A surf instructor on an Italian beach, Franco Guicciardi was looking at the ocean when he saw a flamingo drowning in the water. Knowing they had to help, Guicciardi and his friend grabbed a surfboard and set out to the rescue of the bird.
They reached the bird and immediately pulled him on their board. They saw that the poor bird had no way to get to the land. The bird sat with his wings spread out on the board as his rescuers paddled their way back.
Guicciardi made an Instagram post about the bird, where he wrote, “The animal was exhausted due to strong sea currents and wind.”
Guicciardi then reached out to the local forest patrol for help. They suggested him to contact the Clinica Veterinaria San Giuseppe, and so he did. One of the vets in the clinic advised him to put damp clothes inside a bucket and place the flamingo there so that he would be safe on their way to the clinic. The group of people who had gathered around to watch the rescue helped Guicciardi find wet clothes so the flamingo could be safe.
As expected, the flamingo seemed to be relaxed once he was put inside the bucket.
Then, Guicciardi didn’t waste another minute and took the bird to the vet, who assured him that the bird would be perfectly fine after a few days and would get back to the wild.
“After two days of treatment I was confirmed that the animal is back in flight,” said Guicciardi. “So this news made me very happy for helping a protected species of our island.”
If it weren’t for Guicciardi and all the kind people on the beach, we would have lost a precious life that day. The flamingo is safe, healthy and back to his natural habitat now.
“Thanks to those who contributed to this positive action,” Guicciardi said.
