Nathan Sonoras has been best friends with Loki, his lovely black cat, for the past three years.
“He’s the sweetest little thing,” Sonoras said. “He likes to jump on my lap and cuddle with me. He’s very lovable.”
The stray cat had walked into Sonoras’ life and it looked like he was never going to walk out.
Loki loves him home, but he also loves going outside. From taking long walks around the neighbourhood–and sometimes farther–to playing outside, he loved nature as much as he loved Nathan.
But that didn’t last long.
Sonoras was just getting back home after a long day at work when he spotted something that froze him.
“I saw this black thing in the road up ahead as I was driving. I thought it was a sweatshirt or something at first. But I got closer and saw it was a black cat,” he said. “My greatest fear of having an outdoor cat had been suddenly realized.”
He approached the still creature with tears running down his face. Soon, his girlfriend arrived at the scene. The marks on the corpse confirmed his fears. It was Loki who’d just been run over by a car.
“I was incredibly emotional. I was crying, saying, ‘My cat’s dead — I can’t believe this,’” Sonoras said. “It was pretty traumatizing.”
It seemed like it was the end of Loki.
Until it wasn’t.
The couple took the body home and laid him to rest in their yard. Then, they held an emotional goodbye with a funeral for Loki.
“We dug a hole right by a nice tree,” Sonoras said. “We cried and shared good memories, and talked about how we hoped Loki was running around free in kitty heaven. It was very sad saying our goodbyes.”
But what they didn’t know was Loki was right around the corner.
That midnight, the couple got back home and still grieved for their cat. “We were just crying,” he said. “I just wished and wished so hard that he was still alive.”
Hours after, Sonoras gave a father his ride to work. Since his parents lived right across the street and knew about the cat, he shared the heartbreaking news with his father.
“I explained that Loki had died and we were up pretty late burying him,” he said. “At that moment, right behind me, I heard Loki’s exact meow. I turned out, and there he was.”
Right there, standing behind him, returning home after his newest adventure.
“I jumped back. I was so in shock about the whole thing. I told my dad, ‘What’s going on? I just buried that cat last night,’” Sonoras said. “My dad was shocked as well. Loki is alive somehow.”
And with the shock, came a dose of sheer joy!
The lovely creature was fine, alive and happy.
“I just held him and bawled my eyes out like a baby,” Sonoras said. “Did I wake up in a parallel universe where Loki hadn’t died? Or did I wish him back to life?”
It seems like the man buried a cat that looked similar to his Loki. He hopes that the cat’s family will be informed of their deceased pet.
Right now, Loki is back in the arms of his loving father who is questioning whether the cat needs to be more domestic. Sonoras is still looking for the family that lost their cat in the road.
“I believe all life is sacred,” Sonoras said. “Even if it was another cat, I’m glad I got to honour it in that way.”
