Helena Lundblad got the call asking if her she would care for an orphaned baby goat. Without any hesitation, she agreed to look after the little one. She had looked after a goat before, but she was the founder of a nonprofit animal rescue called Magical Creatures of Hamukua. This meant that taking in animals in need was simply a part of her job.
The tiny goat was found at a campsite, and her mother was nowhere to be seen. She weighed only 4 lbs and her umbilical cord was still intact. This helpless little on definitely needed some help. Despite being so young, she seemed to be healthy, but rescuers would soon realize otherwise.
“I have never taken care of a baby goat before […] When I picked her up, she looked perfectly fine,” Helena said.
They named the kid Janice and she didn’t take long to be part of the family. Janice seemed healthy, but everyone soon realized that she couldn’t walk on her own. Her hooves seemed to be causing some trouble. Helena didn’t know what she could do to help, so she brought the goat to a vet for an examination. “My head is spinning. I have no idea what is attacking her hooves!” Helena wrote in an Instagram post.
Helena started researching and realized the poor kid’s feet had been burnt. She assumed Janice was trying to keep warm but accidentally fell into the campfire instead.
“She must have jumped into their fire pit, at the camping spot,” Helena said. “All legs got burned. It was a miracle her whole body didn’t catch on fire. I brought her to the vet, he couldn’t really do much, but she’s gonna lose at least one hoof.”
Sadly, the vet was right. Janice did have to say goodbye to a couple of hooves, but she was fitted with prosthetics soon after. She had a bit of trouble adjusting to the new feet, Helena’s two family cats were there to cheer her on.
The two cats called Joey and Chandler Bing quickly grew a liking for their new friend. They gave her company while she tried to learn how to walk again. With their love and company, the little goat grew stronger.
It was as though the kitties knew exactly what they were doing. Though they aren’t certified, they became therapy animals to Janice!
Joey, Helena’s black cat, was especially attached to Janice.
“I would just carry her [Janice] with me everywhere, but if I had to leave the house for just a few minutes, I would put Joey down next to her and when I came back, he was always there. He just stayed with her.”, Helena said.
Joey never left Janice alone through her tough times. Now, after spending all that time together, they are the best of friends!
Janice totally blossomed under the cats’ care. Who could have imagined their friendship could result in something so amazing? Janice learned to walk slowly. The walking soon turned into running, and Janice was well into her way to a full recovery.
Even without using any words, these animals were able to communicate with each other. It’s amazing how well their intuition works. Who says animals don’t have emotions?
