It was unbelievable how ill Cotton was when Carmen Morales first met him.

The hungry little white cat was in a lot of pain when she was found on living in the streets of Florida. Mange had spread out throughout his entire body, even his eyes.

“He couldn’t even see or open his eyes bc the mites were so bad,” Morales, founder of Animal Friends Project, told. “It must have been so scary for him out there not being able to see. He was all alone and so skinny because he couldn’t find food.”

Having fostered dozens of rescued cats over the years, Morales created a quarantine ward for Cotton. There, in the bathroom, he was fed meals and treated with arsenal antibiotics. And even though the furry animal was itchy and uncomfortable throughout the process, the healing result in a few days time was worth it.

“We could just see his tense body start to relax as the days passed,” Morales said. “He was finally able to rest without scratching so much.”

Despite his blindness, Cotton immediately trusted Morales. His apparent patience as the woman worked on his irritated skin, applying ointments and coconut oil on them. He started looking forward to the pets and meals that Morales gave him. The improvement was apparent but the best was yet to come. After a few weeks, something astonishing took place.

Cotton opened his eyes.

And he could see!

His eyes were beautiful. One was bright blue and the other was hazel.

Cotton overcame his health issues and, after a few months, he seemed like an entirely different cat than the one he was when he was found.

Without surprise, Morales was shocked. In fact, even Cotton was shocked! The newfound energy in him as he was able to see after such a long time, perhaps even months.

“We thought he was blind, and that he would be blind forever,” Morales said. “The vet thought that even when his eyes recovered they might be damaged, but they weren’t. It was such a wonderful surprise. His eyes were just beautiful.”

The 6-year-old cat seemed like a new cat after three full months in recovery. And doubtlessly, she formed an unbreakable bond with Morales. He followed her everywhere she went, and she was the only one with the special privilege to pet him for longer than others. Around new people, Cotton was small and nervous, but with Morales’s help, he slowly adjusted and became more comfortable.

“If I go into another room, he waits outside the door talking,” Morales said. “He sleeps with me, he stays by my side all of the time … Him and I have a wonderful relationship. He’s a good communicator and loves meowing at me.”

Morales considers herself very fortunate to have found Cotton. After the life he’s had, she’s determined to give him the best, most pampered life of a cat.

And it’s clear that Cotton considers himself just as lucky!

“We got so many applications for him due to his looks, but in the end I saw how attached to me he had become,” Morales said. “I didn’t have the heart to put him through another big change. He had already been through so much.”

Without a doubt, Cotton is very happy to be a part of the family. Now, he spends his days lavishly, relaxing, playing and following Morales everywhere!

“He is so beautiful and just the perfect companion for our family,” Morales said. “Cats like Cotton depend on people to heal, because they cannot always ask for help … I’m sure so many people passed him by because of how sick he looked, but he was just waiting for someone to give him a chance.”
